Kyrenia, also known as Girne, is one of the most attractive towns on the northern coast of Cyprus. Its small historic harbour sits between the Mediterranean Sea and the Kyrenia Mountains, while medieval castles, Gothic ruins and beaches are only a short drive away. You can see the main sights in a day, but staying for two or three nights gives you time to explore the coast and mountains as well.
Kyrenia Old Harbour
The Old Harbour is the natural starting point for a visit to Kyrenia. Fishing boats and yachts fill the curved waterfront, while old stone warehouses have been converted into cafés, restaurants and bars. The harbour is particularly beautiful around sunset, when the castle walls and surrounding buildings reflect the warm evening light.
The area is compact and easy to explore on foot. Walk along the waterfront, then continue through the narrow streets behind it to find small shops, restaurants and traditional buildings.
Kyrenia Castle and the Shipwreck Museum
At one end of the harbour stands Kyrenia Castle, a massive fortress whose history includes Byzantine, Lusignan, Venetian and Ottoman periods. Visitors can walk along the walls and look down over the harbour and Mediterranean Sea. Inside are a chapel, dungeons and several historical exhibits.
The most unusual attraction is the Shipwreck Museum, which contains the remains of an ancient merchant ship that sank off the coast of Cyprus. The vessel and its cargo provide a fascinating glimpse into Mediterranean trade more than two thousand years ago.
Bellapais Abbey
About 15 minutes by car from central Kyrenia, Bellapais Abbey is one of the most beautiful historic sites in the area. This 13th-century Gothic monastery stands on a mountain terrace above the coast, surrounded by the quiet village of Bellapais. Its arches, cloisters and ruined halls are impressive, but the wide view across Kyrenia and the Mediterranean is equally memorable.
Bellapais is worth visiting even if you are not particularly interested in religious architecture. Spend some time walking through the village and stop at one of the cafés or restaurants overlooking the coast.
St. Hilarion Castle
St. Hilarion Castle rises high above Kyrenia in the Beşparmak, or Five Finger, Mountains. Originally developed as a Byzantine defensive position and later expanded, the fortress climbs across several levels of a steep rocky peak. Reaching the upper sections requires plenty of steps, but the views over the northern coast make the effort worthwhile.
The castle is around a 20–30 minute drive from Kyrenia and is easiest to visit by car or taxi. Go in the morning during the warmer months, as there is little shade on the higher sections.
The Old Town and Kyrenia Streets
The streets between the harbour and the modern centre are worth exploring without a strict route. You will find old stone houses, small courtyards, cafés and traces of the different cultures that have shaped the town over centuries. Greek, Ottoman and British influences can still be noticed in local architecture and details.
Kyrenia is small enough that the Old Harbour, castle and central streets can all be explored on foot. A simple walking route can include:
- Kyrenia Old Harbour;
- Kyrenia Castle and Shipwreck Museum;
- the narrow streets of the Old Town;
- a waterfront café or restaurant;
- an evening walk around the harbour.
Beaches Near Kyrenia
Kyrenia is also a good base for a Mediterranean beach holiday. Several beaches lie along the coast west and east of the town, ranging from organised beach clubs to quieter stretches of sand. Escape Beach is one of the popular options west of Kyrenia, while the coast towards Alagadi is known for its long sandy beaches and important sea-turtle nesting areas.
Having a car makes it much easier to combine the historic centre with beaches and mountain attractions. This is especially useful if you want to visit St. Hilarion, Bellapais and several parts of the coast during the same trip.
Driving in Kyrenia and International Driving Permits
Tourists can generally drive in Northern Cyprus using a valid foreign driving licence for up to 90 days. An International Driving Permit is not normally required when the national licence uses the Latin alphabet, but it can still be useful as a multilingual translation of the original licence, particularly when renting a vehicle or dealing with local authorities. The original national licence must always be carried with it.
Is Kyrenia Worth Visiting?
Kyrenia works particularly well because its main attractions are close together but very different from one another. In the morning you can explore a medieval castle, have lunch beside the old harbour, spend the afternoon on a Mediterranean beach and watch the sunset from a mountain village.
For a short stay, prioritise Kyrenia Castle, the Old Harbour, Bellapais Abbey and St. Hilarion Castle. Together they offer the best introduction to the history, scenery and atmosphere of the Kyrenia region.
